Spathoglottis
DESCRIPTION (FROM WIKIPEDIA)Spathoglottis is a genus of orchids (family Orchidaceae). This genus is allied to genera Acanthephippium, Bletia, Calanthe, andPhaius. This genus is abbreviated Spa in trade journals. The genus Paxtonia Lindl. is generally included here.
There are about 45 species of Spathoglottis in diverse habitats in India, Philippines, SE Asia, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Borneo, and Cape York Peninsula in Australia There are both insect-pollinated and self-pollinating species in the genus. They are evergreen plants with crowded pseudobulbs just below the surface of the ground. The 3-lobed labellum projects forward with an extended midlobe which allows insects to land. DESCRIPTION (FROM FLORA OF CHINA)Herbs, terrestrial. Pseudobulbs ovoid or globose, with a few leaves. Leaf blade plicate, narrow, base contracted into a long petiole-like stalk, not articulate, apex acuminate. Inflorescence terminal, erect, racemose, arising from base of pseudobulb; peduncle with several sheaths; rachis sparsely few flowered; floral bracts shorter than pedicel and ovary. Flowers opening widely, medium-sized. Sepals similar. Petals similar to sepals but usually wider; lip not spurred, adnate to base of column, 3-lobed; lateral lobes suberect; mid-lobe clawed at base; disk and claw of mid-lobe often with keels or other appendages.
