The journey that orchids can give
First off, "orchids" are a HUGE group o plants. One doesn't really get to comprehend just how many until a person (like us) undertakes the mammoth task (as we're slowly discovering) of putting it all in one place.
We started with a simple plan of putting orchid species into this site. As we go into each species, we have begun to discover that the orchid, in itself, does not just stop with the plant. The whole history behind it is fascinating.

A taxonomic journey
As we discovered, an orchid doesn't really become an orchid until it becomes described and named. The very first set of data you'll see in each species' page is a history of how it was discovered and the name of the journal or publication it was put in.
It all started as early as three centuries ago and is still going on now.
Having said that, to be very specific about the orchids, we decided to use their scientific names, and delve deeper in this thing called taxonomy: the science of naming species and genera.
